Ah, summer. And what more says summer than the Great American Road Trip? Last month, my husband and I bravely loaded up our 8 month old and 2+ year old to head up to the playground that is Jackson, Wyoming. The drive is about 8 hours, and we did it without any electronic entertainment devices. (Admittedly this is only because I hid that iPad so well from my toddler a couple months ago, that I still haven’t found it.)

And now for photos of the Fort Collins marriage celebration! In true Colorado style, the wedding couple surprised their guests by sharing their new status (married) with family and friends at a fun reception at the Pateros Creek Brewing Company in Fort Collins, Colorado. Great conversation, good beer, and bar games added to the happy mood.

Grandparents, getting ready, late night dancing…these have always been among my favorite things to photograph during weddings. But this year, I have also been enjoying the formal portraits a lot more. I used to stress out about them, but now I just try to go with the flow. Instead of looking for the perfect shaded location, I am more eager to play with highlights and shadows, or back-light people for even lighting on their faces. And (as always) I try to go through them quickly, without a lot of fuss. Let’s do them, try to get real laughs (perhaps thanks to the one joke that I can remember)(which I also made up), try to capture a bit of motion, and let’s get you back to mingling and celebrating with the most important people in your life.

I am looking forward to the wedding of this lovely couple later in the summer. I met up with them at a a park in Highlands Ranch on an unusually warm March day and had fun photographing them. The spot was a bit challenging due to a complete lack of shade and many suburban houses, but I think we made it work really nicely.

One of my favorite places on this earth is downtown Annapolis. It was fun to use my scenic city as a backdrop for my little sister’s senior photo session last summer.

As a Boulder wedding photographer, I love photographing clients in Boulder (for a change). I had fun meeting these two wedding clients on a warm winter/spring night in Boulder, Colorado. The groom had requested a night engagement session, which is not my normal style. Since he was aware of that, I was excited to get out my portable strobes and have some fun…the only way to get better is push yourself!

Today marks the beginning of my 2015 wedding season. I am quite excited to head into Boulder to photograph a wedding celebration at Chautauqua. (I was married there and it is just such a beautiful spot–this is one of my very favorite places to get married.) I can’t wait to see Natasha’s dress and check out their foodie-oriented wedding.

I was excited to photograph Shannon and Michael’s wedding last March. They got married on a snowy day at the Fiske Planetarium on the University of Colorado Boulder campus, which is also where Shannon’s parents got married. The ceremony included a star show after the vows. The reception took place at a private residence in the foothills. It was a unique wedding that I thoroughly enjoyed.

When Cassandra and Jennifer approached me about photographing their wedding, I was very intrigued. These two sisters were getting married at Snow Mountain Ranch in Granby, Colorado. On the same day. After spending time in Japan teaching English, both sisters had fallen in love with amazing Japanese men. And they all decided to share their wedding day. Hence the double wedding. Two “getting into dress” moments, two “first looks”, two “I do’s.” Their wedding also featured home-made Mexican food that was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, a Japanese exercise, a Mexican wedding dance, awesome china that the mom scoured around to find, a fun photo wall, a sweet slideshow…it was a fun, family-oriented wedding tailored to the sisters. I am so glad to be a part of their day. Congratulations again Cassandra and Yuichi and Jennifer and Kazu! I’ve had fun reliving your special day, and I hope you do too.

As I constantly mention, I LOVE photographing the same families over and over. Not only is it fun to chat with the parents to see how their year has been, but it is amazing to connect with the kiddos…

I love, love the Lyons Farmette and Lyons Farmette weddings! There is such a special vibe to the place…the staff are incredibly nice and friendly, the scenery is gorgeous, the animals and Airstream are fun…I feel so happy and relaxed as I photograph events there. And it was no different for Alex and Jennifer’s Lyons Farmette wedding.

I learned something after I had my first kid: I should have gone out more. I should have gone out on long, lingering dates with my husband. I should have spent more of my free time with my girlfriends. I should have gone to more concerts. I should have gone on some epic trips to epic places. I should seen more movies in an actual movie theater. So when I was pregnant with my second, I knew I needed to get out there as much as possible. Weekly evening hikes with girlfriends? Check. Demanding some relaxing “me” time in the form of more frequent pedicures? Check. Flying to Arizona 6 weeks before my due date with my 16 month old son to be a tourist for several days? Check.

Finally, photos from a fall Wild Basin Lodge wedding!
One of the biggest changes has happened since my last blog post: my husband and I welcomed our second son into the world! The baby joined our family earlier in December, and we are still getting to know him and still figuring out how to run our household with two little boys just 18 months apart (I am not sure if we well ever have the latter 100% resolved!). But, we feel especially blessed this holiday season.
