If you’re looking for a newborn photographer in Boulder, Longmont, or the Denver area, you’ve probably already noticed how many options there are—and how different they all feel.
Some photographers use studios with props and posed setups. Others (like me) photograph newborn sessions in your home, focusing on natural, relaxed moments without the need to pack up your baby or stick to a rigid schedule.
Most families aren’t sure which direction is right for them at first—and that’s completely normal.
These five questions will help you figure out what matters most and choose a newborn photographer in Colorado who truly fits your family.
Here are 5 questions to ask before booking your newborn photographer:

1. What Style of Newborn Photography Do You Offer?
Not all newborn photography is created equal. Are you drawn to natural, lifestyle images captured in the comfort of your home? Or do you prefer studio portraits with posed shots and props?
Common styles in Colorado include:
- Lifestyle newborn photography – candid, in-home sessions that focus on connection and emotion.
- Studio/posed photography – classic, posed images often taken in a controlled studio setting.
- Documentary or organic style – natural lighting and minimal styling, focused on storytelling.
Knowing your style preference will help you quickly narrow your search.
If you’re drawn to natural, relaxed images and want a session that doesn’t require leaving the house, lifestyle or in-home newborn photography is usually the best fit.
That’s the approach I take—focusing on connection, natural light, and letting your baby set the pace of the session. (Read what to expect during an in-home newborn photography session .)

2. Are You Experienced With Newborn Safety and Handling?
Newborns are delicate. An experienced photographer will know how to safely read your baby’s cues and work around feeding or fussiness without pressure.
And, because babies are so delicate, I am not a big fan of putting them into intricate poses. Sure, I’ll position them a bit, but I will not overly stylize them. See this blog post on Why I Don’t Pose Newborn Babies.
Look for:
- A portfolio that shows comfortable, relaxed babies
- Testimonials that mention the photographer’s calming presence
This is especially important if you’re searching for someone to come into your home for an in-home newborn session in Colorado.

3. Do You Travel or Offer In-Home Newborn Photography in Colorado?
If packing up your days-old baby doesn’t sound ideal, an in-home newborn session may be the perfect fit. Many photographers in Boulder, Denver, and beyond offer lifestyle sessions where they come to you.
Ask:
- What areas do you serve? (e.g., Longmont, Fort Collins, Colorado Springs)
- Do you charge travel fees?
- What lighting conditions are ideal for in-home sessions?
I prefer in-home newborn photo sessions, and serve from Golden to Fort Collins (south to north) without additional travel fees. This includes Denver, Boulder, Longmont, Berthoud, Louisville, Lafayette, Erie, Brighton, Broomfield, Arvada.
As for lighting conditions, this isn’t a concern! I open up (and even sometimes close) blinds and shades, use window light, have gentle studio lights. I have written several blog posts about preparing your home for photos. Check them out:

4. What’s Included in Your Newborn Photography Collections?
Pricing can vary quite a bit between newborn photographers in Colorado, so it’s helpful to understand how everything is structured before booking.
For my sessions, there is a $300 session fee to reserve your date. This includes planning support, access to my client wardrobe, and your in-home photography session.
After your gallery is ready, you’ll choose a collection that includes a set of digital images along with print credit for artwork or albums.
Most families invest between $1100 and $1875 total, depending on what they choose for their home and how many images they’d like to keep.
All sessions include guidance throughout the process, and partners, siblings, grandparents, and pets are always welcome.

5. When Should I Book My Newborn Session?
Most professional photographers recommend booking during your second trimester. Why? Newborn sessions are usually scheduled within the first 5–14 days after birth, and many photographers only take a limited number of clients per month to allow for flexibility.
Bonus tip: Some Colorado photographers also offer last-minute newborn sessions, so it’s still worth reaching out if your baby has already arrived!

What Most Families Don’t Realize When Choosing a Newborn Photographer
Most families think they’re choosing based on price or editing style.
But what actually makes the biggest difference is how the session feels.
In-home newborn sessions tend to be:
- more relaxed (no packing up your baby)
- more flexible (feeding, breaks, siblings)
- more comfortable (you’re already in your space)
If you’re already feeling a little overwhelmed, choosing a photographer who comes to you and guides everything can make this process much easier.
Final Thoughts on In-home Newborn Photography
Choosing a newborn photographer isn’t just about style—it’s about how the experience will feel during those early days at home.
If you’re looking for something relaxed, flexible, and centered around your real life (without packing up your baby or worrying about timing everything perfectly), in-home newborn photography is often the best fit.
I photograph newborn sessions in homes across Boulder, Longmont, Berthoud, and the surrounding Front Range, and guide you through the entire process so it feels simple from start to finish.
