Boulder families tend to be laid-back, a little adventurous, and not particularly interested in stiff posed photos — which is exactly my kind of client. I'm Susannah, a Boulder family and newborn photographer with 15 years of experience capturing Colorado families the way they actually are: genuine, warm, and completely worth remembering.
I photograph newborns, growing families, and high school seniors throughout Boulder — with an easy, guided approach that keeps things feeling real from start to finish.
The newborn stage is over so fast. And the weeks just before — that last stretch of pregnancy when everything feels both endless and fleeting — deserve to be documented too.
I offer both maternity sessions and newborn sessions, and many Boulder families book both. There's something special about having images that bookend that entire season: the anticipation, and then the arrival.
Maternity
Boulder has some of the most beautiful settings for maternity sessions in Colorado — the golden afternoon light at Chautauqua Park with the Flatirons behind you, the paths along South Boulder Creek, or simply your own home if you want something intimate and real. Sessions are relaxed and unhurried. You don't need a plan, a pose, or a perfectly decorated nursery. I also have a client wardrobe available — so if finding the right dress for your maternity session is one more thing you don't have time for, I've got you covered.
Newborn
In-home newborn sessions are my favorite way to document those first days — because your home is where the real story lives. The crib you painted. The chair you nursed in at 3am. The sibling who can't stop trying to hold the baby. I work entirely at your baby's pace — there's time for feeding, soothing, and all the unhurried snuggles. I'll gently wrangle siblings, help nervous partners relax, and keep everything as calm as possible. You just soak it in.
One tip: I recommend booking your newborn session during pregnancy so your spot is reserved. The sweet spot for photos is days 5–14, before babies get too alert and wiggly — and those weeks fill up fast.
Some of my favorite Boulder family sessions happen at home — in the kitchen, the living room, the backyard where the kids actually spend their time. Your house does not need to be perfect. In fact, the lived-in details are usually what make the images feel true. A pile of books. The light through your kitchen window at 5pm. The backyard where everyone ends up on a Sunday afternoon.
When families want to get outside, Boulder has some genuinely beautiful spots. I love the Shanahan Ridge for iwide open meadows and mountain views. Of course, the red rocks near Mt. Sanitas have a rugged, Colorado-specific feel that photographs beautifully. If Chautauqua is meaningful to your family, we can make it work as well.
What I care about most is that the session feels like your family, not a performance of it. I'll handle the planning, help with wardrobe, keep young kids moving, and make sure you leave with images that actually make it onto your walls.
Senior year has a way of sneaking up on you. One day they're the child in your family photos, and suddenly you're ordering their cap and gown.
I photograph seniors from Boulder High, Fairview, New Vista, and nearby schools at places like the Sunrise Amphitheater up Flagstaff, the Red Rocks near Mount Sanitas, at Chautauqua, or wherever feels meaningful to them. I help find the perfect spot and guide your senior during the session to create photos that look and file like them. Multiple outfits welcome- during these unhurried sessions.
Parents are welcome at senior photo sessions, and most Boulder moms I work with are right there — because honestly, watching your kid be photographed as the person they've become is its own kind of moment.
Senior season books quickly. If you have a rising senior at home, now is the time to reach out.
Family, newborn, and maternity sessions include a $300 session fee. After your gallery reveal you choose a collection of digital files and print credit toward artwork, ranging from $800–$1,500. Most Longmont families invest between $1,100 and $1,875 total.
Senior portrait sessions start at $600 and include 15 digital images plus yearbook photo submission. Upgrades available.
Every session includes planning support, styling guidance, and a curated online gallery. And because I know a folder of digital files sitting on your computer isn't the goal — print credit is built into every collection so the images actually end up somewhere you can see them.
Book two sessions within 12 months and receive $300 off your second session fee. This is especially popular with maternity and newborn clients who want to document both pregnancy and those first weeks with baby — and with newborn families who return for a family session as their baby grows. Parents of seniors who add a family session while everyone is together love it too.

01. Where do you recommend for family photos in Boulder?
I will always recommend you hold your photo session at your home at least once--there is no better way to tell your story or create meaningful images. Other than that, it depends on your family and what feels like you. Again, I try to get with meaningful! But, the Shanahan Ridge has beautiful meadows and mountain views and is less crowded that Chautauqua or the South Boulder Trail. The red rocks near Mt. Sanitas have a rugged, distinctly Colorado feel. Chautauqua is stunning, but it can be so crowded. If we photograph there, I suggest we also walk around to capture spots other than those iconic Flatirons.
01. Where do you recommend for family photos in Boulder?
Colorado weather is unpredictable, and outdoor sessions sometimes need to shift. I monitor forecasts closely leading up to your session and will reach out if we need to reschedule or pivot to an indoor option. A little overcast light is actually beautiful for portraits — it's the hard midday sun that's the real enemy. We'll figure it out together.
02. What if the weather doesn't cooperate?
No — newborn sessions are always in-home. Those first days are tender and unpredictable. Babies need to feed, be soothed, and move at their own pace, and your home gives us the time and space to do that well. Your house does not need to look a certain way. The real details are usually what make newborn images feel worth keeping. Plus, that Colorado sun can be so harsh on a baby!
03. Do you photograph newborns outdoors?
Not even a little. I've photographed in tiny apartments, cluttered living rooms, and homes that were mid-renovation. What makes a newborn session beautiful isn't the decor — it's the light coming through your windows, the way you hold your baby, and the details that are specific to your family right now. I'll find the good light and work around the rest. You don't need to clean for me.
04. My house isn't Pinterest-worthy. Does that matter for an in-home photo session?
Yes, absolutely. Wardrobe guidance is part of the planning process. I'll give you specific direction based on your family's coloring, your location, and what tends to photograph well — so you're not spiraling over outfit choices the week before your session.
I even have a small client wardrobe and a wardrobe planning software that clients can access.
05. I'm worried about what to wear — can you help?
For all sessions, you'll receive a curated online gallery. Upon viewing your photos, you choose which collection to purchase--every collection includes print credit toward artwork. This is to encourage you to have images that end up on your walls, not just on your computer. I can help you think through sizing, placement, and what would work in your home.
