I photographed a senior session at Boulder’s Chautauqua Park last week, and it reminded me why this is one of my favorite places to shoot senior portraits in Boulder. While capturing the iconic Flatirons photos is usually requested, it is the variety of other backdrops in the park that draw me to this area. And, that provides many looks for senior pictures. If you’re a Boulder-area senior looking for photos that feel like you, here’s where I’d point you, and what I’d tell you before you book.

Why Chautauqua Park Works So Well for Senior Photos
Chautauqua is a popular spot for Boulder senior portraits, and for good reason. As I mentioned, the variety of backgrounds adds interest and variety to senior photos. From the Flatirons, to the mountains on the north side of the park; from the gardens to the cottages; from the General Store porch to the stone steps near the Chautauqua Auditorium….there are so many options!
One thing worth knowing: Chautauqua sits on Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks land, and OSMP does require a permit for professional photography sessions there. I handle that as part of booking a session at this location, so it’s one less thing to think about.

Boulder Creek Path
The creek, trees, and rocks. This is a strong pick if you want a mix of walking shots and quieter moments without driving anywhere near the mountains. It can be crowded depending upon time of day, so consider that!
Pearl Street Mall
For a senior who wants an urban, downtown feel — brick, string lights, a little energy in the background — Pearl Street (especially alleys) is a great backdrop.
CU Boulder Campus
If you’re headed to CU in the fall, or you just want that classic campus architecture in your senior photos, CU is certainly an option. I like the pond, Old Main area, and flagstaff buildings as backdrops.
NCAR Trails and the Foothills
For a senior who wants something a little less crowded than Chautauqua but still wants the mountains, the trails near NCAR give a quieter, more open feel with similar mountain views.

What to Know Before Your Boulder Senior Session
- Late afternoon/evening sessions get the best light at most Boulder locations — we’ll build your session time around it.
- Boulder sits at elevation, so weather moves fast. I keep an eye on it and we’ll adjust timing if we need to.
- Most seniors bring two outfit options: a dressier look and a more relaxed look.
- If you want yearbook photos included, let me know when you book — I submit those directly to your high school so you don’t have to.
Boulder Senior Session Options
Every senior session starts at $600 and includes 15 edited images plus your yearbook submission. Upon viewing your online gallery of images, you can upgrade to 25 images and a $100 print credit or all images and a $200 print credit. You can also book a session with a friend.
