When to Book Senior Photos in Colorado’s Front Range (And Why Summer Fills Fast)

By Susannah Storch | Susannah Storch Photography | Serving Northern Colorado, Boulder, Denver, Broomfield, Golden & the Front Range

The best time to book senior photos in Colorado is between May and July — ideally before summer sessions fill up. Most Colorado high schools require yearbook photos by October or November, which means your session needs to happen well before fall. Summer offers the best light, the most flexible schedules, and the widest variety of outdoor locations. Whether you’re planning Colorado senior portraits near Boulder, Longmont, Golden, or anywhere along the Front Range, the timeline is the same — and earlier is always better. If it’s already August or September, dates may still be available, but booking now is essential to secure your spot.

Here’s everything you need to know about timing your teen’s senior portraits in Colorado.

When Are Senior Photos Due for Colorado Yearbooks?

Most Colorado high schools require yearbook photos to be submitted in October or November of your senior’s fall semester. That deadline comes up faster than families expect — especially once school starts and life fills up with college applications, AP classes, fall sports, homecoming, and everything else senior year throws at you.

This means the actual session needs to happen well before October. And that’s where summer comes in.

Why Summer Is the Best Time to Book Senior Photos in Colorado

Colorado summers are honestly unbeatable for outdoor senior portraits. Here’s why most families in Longmont, Boulder, Loveland, Broomfield, and the Denver area book their Colorado senior photo sessions between June and August:

The light is gorgeous. Long summer days mean golden hour lasts longer, giving us warm, beautiful light that flatters every skin tone and makes Colorado’s landscapes glow.

Your senior has time. Once school starts in late August, schedules fill up fast — homework, sports practice, jobs, college visits. Summer means unhurried sessions with no Monday morning looming.

Locations are at their best. Colorado’s open fields, mountain backdrops, rivers, and parks are lush and green in summer. Fall sessions are beautiful too, but summer gives you the widest variety of looks.

You have breathing room before the deadline. Booking in summer means your gallery is delivered, you’ve chosen your favorites, and your yearbook image is submitted — all before the fall rush hits.

What Happens If You Wait Until Fall?

It’s tempting to wait — fall light in Colorado is stunning, and many families picture their senior surrounded by golden aspen leaves. And fall sessions are beautiful. But here’s the reality:

  • Dates fill up fast. Senior photographers in Northern Colorado and the Denver area often have fully booked fall calendars by July or August.
  • Yearbook deadlines sneak up. If your school’s deadline is late October, you may have a very narrow window to shoot, edit, and submit in time.
  • Fall schedules are packed. Between sports, activities, and college application deadlines, finding a day that works for everyone becomes surprisingly difficult.

If you have your heart set on fall foliage, the solution is simple: book your date now to secure a spot, and we’ll schedule your session for early September before the real crunch hits.

The Ideal Senior Portrait Timeline for Colorado Families

Here’s a simple timeline to keep things stress-free:

May – June (Right Now) Book your session and pay your retainer to secure your date. We’ll start planning outfits, locations, and timing together.

June – August Your session takes place! Plan for 1–2 hours with outfit changes. I’ll guide your senior through every pose so they feel natural and confident — even if they’re nervous at first.

2–3 Weeks After Your Session Your hand-edited online gallery is delivered. You’ll choose your favorite images, and I’ll take care of formatting and submitting the yearbook photo directly to your school.

October – November Yearbook deadline arrives — and you’re already done. No scrambling, no stress.

What About Spring Senior Sessions?

Spring sessions — think April through early June — are a beautiful and often overlooked option in Colorado. Wildflowers are blooming, the light is soft, and you beat the summer rush entirely. If your teen is a current junior wrapping up their school year, a late spring session is worth considering. You’ll have your gallery before summer even starts.

How Far in Advance Should I Book?

For summer sessions, booking 4–8 weeks in advance is ideal. Popular dates — especially weekend evenings for golden hour — fill up quickly once the school year ends and families start planning.

For fall sessions, I’d recommend booking by July at the latest to ensure you have date options that work around your senior’s schedule.

Senior Photos Across Northern Colorado and the Boulder Area

Families come to me from all across the Front Range — from Golden to Fort Collins, from Lyons to Broomfield, and places in between like Longmont, Niwot, Erie, Loveland, Berthoud, and Boulder. Each area has its own great session spots, and I’ll help you pick the right one based on the feeling your senior is going for.

Boulder-area seniors tend to love the mountain backdrop feel — we’re close enough to the foothills to get that dramatic scenery without a long drive. Golden is another favorite for that reason. Broomfield and Erie seniors often go for open fields or reservoir views, which photograph beautifully in summer golden hour.

Wherever you’re located, I serve students from Longmont High, Skyline, Niwot, Erie, Holy Family, Broomfield, Monarch, Boulder High, Fairview, Berthoud, and surrounding schools — and I’m happy to travel to the location that feels right for your senior.

Ready to Reserve Your Date?

Senior season in Northern Colorado, Boulder, Broomfield, Golden, and the Denver area moves fast — and I’d love to help celebrate your teen’s milestone with portraits that feel 100% them. Families across Northern Colorado book senior photos between June and August for good reason.

Sessions start at $600 and include 15 hand-edited digital images plus yearbook photo submission handled for you. A $200 retainer reserves your date, and upgrade options are available after your gallery is delivered.
