Longmont Colorado Family Outdoor Portraits

Roger’s Grove in Longmont is one of my favorite spots — trees, paths, and the St. Vrain River all in one place, without the crowds you’d find at more well-known locations. On a warm late fall day, I met this sweet family here and we just let things unfold. A girl, her baby brother, and two parents who were completely game for whatever. These are exactly the sessions I love most.

If you’re a Longmont family looking for outdoor portraits, Roger’s Grove is absolutely worth considering — and I’m happy to suggest other spots based on your family’s ages and what you’re going for.

Why Roger’s Grove Works So Well for Family Photos

Roger’s Grove is one of those locations that just keeps giving. The St. Vrain River runs along the edge with beautiful shade trees — which means we can shoot a bit later in the day without fighting harsh light. There are logs for kids to climb on, which naturally encourages movement and fun without anyone having to be told to pose. A stand of evergreens surrounded by tall grasses photographs beautifully even when the rest of Colorado has gone brown. And if your family is up for a little walking, the river trail, a small amphitheater, and a fun overpass add even more variety to the session.

Parking is easy — right off Hover Street, north of Boston Avenue and south of 3rd. No permits needed, no crowds, just a genuinely lovely park that most people outside Longmont don’t know about.

What to Expect at an Outdoor Family Session

Outdoor sessions are relaxed and fully guided — you won’t spend the hour wondering what to do with your hands. I’ll suggest a few natural setups and then mostly watch for the real stuff: the kids climbing something they weren’t supposed to, the laugh that happens when everyone stops trying. Sessions run about an hour, though I don’t time it. I read energy and push through to the end because that’s often where the best moments happen.

Toddlers are welcome. Reluctant spouses are welcome. Kids who said they didn’t want to come are welcome. It almost always works out.
