This is a session I photographed at a family’s home in Boulder — two kids, two parents, an afternoon of fun. Piano playing, bed jumping, running across the lawn, quiet moments by the window. By the end we had images from five or six different spots in and around the house, and the family barely had to do anything to make it happen.
That’s the short version of how an in-home session works. The longer version is below.

How an In-Home Family Session Works
I come to you. We spend an hour or two moving through your home — living room, bedrooms, kitchen, backyard, wherever the light and the family’s energy take us. I bring my equipment; you don’t need to prep a backdrop or clear a space for a shoot. You just need to be home.
During the session, I’ll suggest a few things — a spot with good window light, a moment to try — but mostly I’m following what’s already happening. Kids doing what they do, parents interacting with them, the ordinary stuff that’s actually what you’ll want to remember.
I move furniture and household items as needed so exhausted parents don’t have to think about it. Laundry on the floor, dishes in the sink, a lived-in couch — none of it is a problem. I work around it or crop it out.

This Boulder Photography Session
This family had a lot going on in their Boulder home, and we used most of it. The kids played piano — one of those spontaneous moments that turns into a good photo because it’s just true. We did some bed jumping, which is reliable with young kids and usually produces at least one image worth keeping. Dad threw his son in the air in the backyard. Mom and her daughter had a quiet moment by a window. We wrapped up near the pool.
I photographed both posed and unposed moments throughout — a few where everyone looks at the camera, and a lot more where they don’t. The action shots are almost always the ones families come back to.

Boulder In-Home Family Session FAQ
Do I need to clean my house before an in-home session?
A general tidy is helpful, but your home doesn’t need to be spotless. I work in the frame and move things as needed. I have a separate post on how to prepare for an in-home session if you want the full list.
What if my kids won’t cooperate?
They almost never cooperate the way parents expect them to — and that’s fine. I’ve been doing this for nearly 20 years and have two sons. Your kids will not be the most challenging I’ve photographed. In-home sessions are actually easier for reluctant kids because they’re on familiar ground and can take breaks.
How long does an in-home family session take?
Most run 90 minutes to two hours. That gives enough time to move through a few areas of the home and get a real range of images without anyone burning out.
Do you do in-home newborn sessions in Boulder too?
Yes — in-home is my primary recommendation for newborn sessions. Learn more about what an in-home newborn session looks like.
What areas of Boulder do you serve?
I serve Boulder and the surrounding communities — including North Boulder, South Boulder, the Hill, and nearby areas like Niwot, Louisville, and Lafayette. Get in touch to talk through your location.
