Welcoming a new baby comes with a lot of questions — especially when it comes to photos.
This page answers the most common questions parents ask about in-home newborn photography, so you know exactly what to expect before booking.
These sessions are designed to be calm and flexible, with plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and snuggling.
01. Newborn sessions take place in your home for everyone's comfort.
02. Sessions typically last 60-90 minutes, but I do not time them. I let your baby's energy determine the session length.
03. Parents, siblings, pets, and grandparents are welcome.
04. No professional decor or deep cleaning required.
I offer in-home lifestyle newborn photography that focuses on natural moments, connection, and comfort rather than heavily posed setups. Sessions take place in your home with gentle guidance.
The goal is to document what life feels like now without props, forced poses, or studio environments.
And no lugging new baby out of the home!
Newborn sessions typically take place within the first 2 weeks after birth, but there is flexibility. Beautiful images can be made with both sleepy newborns and more alert babies.
If your baby arrives early, late, or you need extra recovery time, we can adjust timing to what works best for your family.
Susannah made the entire experience feel calm and easy — even with a fussy baby.”
-Keely S., Family Client, Longmont
Most in-home newborn sessions take place in the morning when baby's mood and natural light are both typically at their best.
No deep cleaning is necessary. I work with available light and simple spaces like bedrooms, living rooms, or nurseries.
Your home does not need to look perfect — it just needs to feel like yours. Small adjustments can be made during the session if needed.
Susannah is amazing with young children...and has an eye for capturing the energy and spirit of children.
-Kris T., Family Client, Denver
Lifestyle newborn sessions use minimal props. Simple items like blankets, swaddles, or a nursery chair are used, and I recommend including any items that are particularly meaningful.
I do not use elaborate props, baskets, or forced poses.
Many mamas feel this way, and it’s completely understandable. Newborn sessions are gently guided, with flattering light and natural posing that doesn’t require you to “perform” for the camera.
You don’t need to look or feel a certain way to be photographed meaningfully with your baby.
You can also ask me about my wardrobe planning service, as well as my growing client wardrobe.
03. What if my baby has reflux, gas, or needs to be held constantly?
No. While very early sessions can result in curlier, sleepier poses, newborn photography does not require your baby to be under two weeks old.
Awake moments, stretching, eye contact, and natural interactions are just as meaningful — and often more reflective of real life.
01. Do newborn photos have to be taken in the first 14 days?
This is completely normal and very common in newborns. These details are expected and photographed gently.
Final images are edited with a light, natural touch — enough to soften temporary skin issues without making your baby look overly retouched or unrealistic.
02. What if my baby has baby acne, scratches, or peeling skin?
That’s very common, and sessions are designed with this in mind. Babies are welcome to be held, fed, or soothed as often as needed.
A baby who wants to be close is not a problem — those moments often result in the most meaningful images.
Health and safety always come first. If someone in your household is unwell, the session can be rescheduled.
Newborn sessions are booked with flexibility specifically to allow for these situations.
04. What happens if someone is sick on the day of the session?
Yes, grandparents can be included if they’re present and you’d like them photographed. These moments are kept relaxed and informal, without adding pressure to the session.
05. Can grandparents be included in newborn photos?
I primarily use natural light and bring professional camera equipment suitable for in-home photography.
Additional lighting is minimal and used only if needed to maintain soft, natural results.
06. Do you bring lighting or equipment with you?
Yes. Your baby’s comfort and safety come first at all times.
All posing is gentle and natural, with no forced positions. Sessions are paced slowly, and babies are never placed in uncomfortable or unsafe situations.
07. Is newborn photography safe?
That’s very common, and it’s not a problem. I work intentionally with available light and will choose the brightest areas of your home, often near windows, to create soft, natural images.
If needed, I bring professional equipment to supplement light while keeping the final photos natural and true to life. Your home does not need to be bright or “photo-ready” for a successful session.
08. What HAPPENS IF MY HOUSE IS REALLY DARK?
After your session, images are carefully edited with a focus on true-to-life color and natural skin tones.
You’ll receive an online gallery where you can view your images and select digital files and printed artwork.
The number of images varies based on session flow and timing, but galleries typically include a thoughtfully curated collection of finished images.
The focus is on quality, consistency, and storytelling rather than a set number.
10. How many images will we receive?
Yes. Digital images are available, and many families choose to purchase digital files for easy sharing and long-term keeping.
Printed artwork and albums are also offered as an option, but there is no requirement to purchase physical products unless you choose to.
11. Is it possible to only get the digitalS?
Most families invest an average of $1,200 for their session.
