Planet Bluegrass Wedding {Lyons, Colorado}

Last September I had the chance to be the second photographer of Melanie and Jason’s Planet Bluegrass wedding in Lyons, Colorado.

A couple thoughts…getting married at Planet Bluegrass seems like just about the coolest wedding venue possible. Home to Rocky Grass and the Folks Festival, Planet Bluegrass is steeped in music tradition. And it is beautiful–the stage, the silo, the open grassy field, the rock wall by the North St. Vrain River.

And I remember that Melanie and Jason’s wedding fully took advantage of the venue’s features. The ceremony site was beautiful, there was a duck race in the river and a bonfire at night. There were lawn games and live music. But what I remember most was the emotion that wedding guests displayed during the ceremony–many tears of joy. I go to lots of wedding each year, and Melanie and Jason’s ceremony was one of the most beautiful and emotional ones I’ve seen.

And on second shooting a wedding…I enjoy doing this a couple times a year. Second shooting allows photographers to test out new techniques and be more creative without the worries of missing key wedding moments. At this wedding, I used my off-camera flash on the dance floor, but wasn’t overly pleased with the reliability (or lack of reliability) of my Canon 580EXII  flash and my Pocket Wizard radio transmitter and receiver. (I have since come up with a better system.) For this wedding, Marj Merges was the primary/main photographer.
